Legalisation of cannabis for medical use

Learning standard: 

Reading 3.1.2 Understand specific details and information in extended texts on a wide range of familiar topics

Reading 3.2.1 Read a variety of suitable print and digital texts to investigate and analyze national issues

Writing 4.1.4 Express and respond to opinions and common feelings such as amusement, anger, and regret


Materials: Article (student's copy, teacher's copy), thinking routines 'compass points' handout, dictionary


Objectives:

1. Students will be able to answer the comprehension questions based on the newspaper article

2. Students will be able to write down opinions based on visible thinking routine 'compass points'.


Pre-lesson:

1. Teacher asks students what today's topic will be based on the keywords (Khairy, cannabis, legalise)?  *Prior to this lesson, they were given a task to Google search these keywords and roughly read the articles that appear

2. Teacher writes students' answers on the board.


Lesson-development

1. Teacher distributes the article to students and instructs them to answer the comprehension questions.

2. Before checking the answers together, the teacher asks the students what are the gists of the article.

3. Teacher and students check the answers together.


Post-reading

1. Teacher distributes 'Compass points' handout to students.

Compass points:


2. Teacher instructs students to share with their partner after they have done writing down their thoughts on the compass points handout.

3. Teacher collects the handout from students.


Reflection: Using the compass points enables me to look at diverse opinions regarding this issue. Since this class is low to mid-proficiency classroom, for the compass points, I prepared sentence starters for them.
